Heroin in the Suburbs

Many people have the impression that heroin is only abundant in the inner city areas, but this is far from the truth. The National Institute on Drug Abuse points out that three recent studies have found nearly half of young people who inject heroin reported abusing prescription opioids before starting to use heroin. It has no boundaries, and it is cheaper and easier to get then prescription painkillers for most. According to the 2011 National Survey on Drug Use and Health, the number of people who were past-year heroin users in 2011 (620,000) was higher than the number in 2007 (373,000).

According to a study posted in JAMA Psychiatry, in today’s society the average first time heroin user is much more likely to be a 23-year old white woman than anyone else. A March 2010 report by ABC News highlights efforts by drug traffickers in Mexico and Columbia to market heroin to suburban teens, by splashing popular logos, like Prada or Chevrolet, on the small drug packets.

Although painkiller(opiates) and heroin are almost identical, an overdose with heroin use is much more likely. Users do not know what chemicals are used, and each batch can be different. Also, use of heroin and needles is very dangerous, not sterile, and can lead to many viruses and diseases, such as: HIV and AIDS.
